Баланс белого

Human eye and brain automatically compensate for the color of ambient light, so we perceive white paper as white whether we are under warm tungsten bulbs or under a cold blue northern sky. Digital sensors lack this cognitive adaptability; they record absolute spectral energy distribution. Therefore, an uncorrected camera under warm indoor lighting will capture an image dominated by an intense yellow-orange cast, while shade or an overcast sky will yield a heavy blue cast. Баланс белого (White Balance, WB) is the computational or optical mechanism that neutralizes these color casts by scaling the red, green, and blue (RGB) channel gains so that neutral tones are rendered accurately.

Принцип работы и цветовая температура

The foundation of white balance adjustment rests upon цветовая температура, measured in Kelvins (K). Every light source emits radiation that corresponds roughly to the radiation of a theoretical black body heated to a specific temperature. Paradoxically, in photography, lower Kelvin values (around 2000K–3000K, like candlelight or old incandescent bulbs) are called "warm" because they emit more red and yellow light, whereas higher values (5000K–8000K, like shade or cloudy skies) are called "cold" because they shift toward the blue end of the spectrum.

When a camera performs white balance, it multiplies the pixel values of each color channel by specific amplification factors ($R_{gain}$, $G_{gain}$, $B_{gain}$). If the scene is illuminated by a warm light source with a low Kelvin value, the camera increases the gain of the blue channel and decreases the gain of the red channel to restore visual neutrality.

Режимы баланса белого в камере

Modern digital cameras offer several ways to determine and apply correction coefficients:

  • Автоматический баланс белого (AWB): Camera's processor analyzes the scene and attempts to guess the average color temperature. It works well in everyday mixed or daylight conditions, but can fail under monochromatic light sources, sunsets, or theatrical stage lighting.
  • Предустановки (Presets): Fixed values calibrated for typical lighting conditions: «Солнечно» (Daylight, ~5200K), «Облачно» (Cloudy, ~6000K), «Тень» (Shade, ~7000K–8000K), «Лампа накаливания» (Tungsten, ~3200K), и «Флуоресцентная лампа» (Fluorescent).
  • Ручной выбор в Кельвинах (Manual K): Direct input of the color temperature value chosen by the photographer.
  • Пользовательский или ручной баланс белого по эталону (Custom WB): Measurement of color temperature directly on location using a цветовая мишень и серая карта. The camera photographs a neutral target under the actual shooting light and calculates precise correction multipliers.

Практическое применение и творческий контроль

While the technical goal of white balance is often neutrality, photographers frequently manipulate it for artistic purposes. Warming up the white balance during a sunset enhances golden hour tones, whereas cooling it down can emphasize a moody, melancholy atmosphere in a landscape or urban night scene.

When working in RAW format, the precise white balance setting chosen at the moment of capture is non-destructive. The raw sensor data stores the original color channels unmodified, attaching the selected white balance as metadata. During проявка RAW, the photographer can alter the temperature and tint sliders freely without suffering quality degradation or banding.

Типичные ошибки и заблуждения

A common misconception is that auto white balance guarantees correct skin tones in every situation. In reality, large patches of a single dominant color (such as a green lawn or a red brick wall) can trick the AWB algorithm into introducing complementary color casts. Another error is relying solely on the camera's rear LCD screen under uncontrolled ambient light to judge color accuracy; LCD screens often appear too warm or too cool depending on external illumination. For critical color work, relying on histograms or standardized calibration tools is essential.
